The BOAT-TAILED GRACKLE (Quiscalus major). Get this: in northern Florida, and only in northern Florida, they have yellow eyes. Everywhere else, they have black eyes.

This dog was very curious as to what I was going in the car next to him.

We got a new birdfeeder, which means two things. #1: I'll have plenty of bird pictures, which is good because I was getting desperate for subjects and I have 280 days left in the year and #2: our squirrel population will increase as well. I'm a little behind on my squirrel recognition; I am not sure if this is the EASTERN FOX SQUIRREL (Sciurus niger) or the EASTERN GRAY SQUIRREL (Sciurus carolinensis).

heliotropism: a diurnal response where plants track the motion of the sun.
Ginger started these plants inside for her garden, and it hasn't gotten quite warm enough to put them outside. Everynight before I go to sleep, I turn them away from the sliding glass doors, and everyday when I come home, they have turned and "grown" towards the sun. In an amazingly geeky bit of trivia, heliotropism was recorded by Leonardo da Vinci in the early 1500's.

Just about dusk, as I was looking for a picture, I heard a huge commotion behind the house. Our property adjoins a narrow strip of unoccupied land, technically some guy's cow pasture, but it is really wet and a little swampy and often times has standing water. Just as it was getting dark, a massive flock of migrating Ibis's, probably 250-300 strong, descened upon this little stretch of nature, turning it white with their beautiful feathers and curved bills.

After being exiled for the last few months due to the Tybee Island Marathon and the Gate River Run, it's time to dust off the bike.

Farewell my love; Parting is such sweet sorrow. . .but 10 days of having the bed all to myself and not having to share the hot water and no food accountability makes it better!

Our neighbors just had two dump truck loads of dirt dumped in their front yard. Pretty exciting, huh?

I took this picture today of a woodpecker in our backyard. Look closely--it's not the Red-Headed Woodpecker, or the Pileated Woodpecker, or the Downy or the Yellow-Headed or the Woody variety--but the Red-Bellied Woodpecker, MELANERPES carolinus!
